The present ruins of the Castle that was built in the 12th century dominate the hilltop.
The first documented mention of the village was in the year 1113 in a document, which described the donation of an estate from Guarino de Olbia to the rector of San Pietro Apostolo Church. Guarino de Olbia was succeeded by his son, Riccardo de Formari, who was killed during the revolt of the farmers in 1122.
Over the centuries, the Castle passed through the possession of the Orsini family, the del Balzo, the de Cordova from Spain and de Loffredo, witnessing many great figures and moments of Irpinia history. In the second half of the 15th century it underwent many changes and was transformed into a noble residence. In the following years, the castle was damaged by many earthquakes and it was pulled down in order to build an aeronautical observatory.
