Aquilonia had a castle that was built by the Lombards on the highest point of the old hamlet.
The first document proving the existence of the castle dates back to 1078 when the castle was besieged and destroyed by the Normans under the command of Robert d'Hauteville.
During its long history the fief belonged to several aristocratic families among them: Cotigni, del Balzo, Caracciolo and finally Imperiale.
The castle which has seen many additions to its original structure over the centuries, was transformed into a residence in the 17th century and was completely destroyed by an earthquake that stuck the area in 1930.
