Bonito is a picturesque village, perched on a hill overlooking the left bank of the Ufita river.
The Castle dominates the village that grew up around it overlooking the Calore and the Ufita Valley.
Its origins date back to the Lombard period (9th cent.). The Castle had become quite an important stronghold and was regularly used as the Bishop's residence in 1030.
In 1125, an earthquake destroyed most of the castle, which necessitated its extensive rebuilding and refurbishing. The castle underwent many changes and improvements until abandoned by the Bonito family in 1675.
The 11th century castle had five towers but only two have survived to the present day.
