    HISTORICAL NOTES | TOURIST INFORMATION

    Historical notes

Casalbore is sited at the top of a hill (600 metres above sea level) overlooking the River Miscano. The original hamlet was built in the Norman period and first recorded in 1118.
Through the years, the Castle belonged to several aristocratic families. Finally, in 1485, it was purchased by the Caracciolos who owned the complex until 1806.
Unfortunately the medieval fortress was destroyed in the earthquake of 1962.
The present quadrangular Tower dating back to the second half of the 12th century is one of the best preserved examples of Norman Towers in Irpinia.
The Norman Tower is more than 10 m. high, is entered by a stone portal that was built by the Caracciolo family in the 17th century.
The little village of Casalbore has also a very interesting archaeological site. The finds from the archaeological site are in the Archeological Museum of Avellino and Ariano Irpino.
