The village of Guardia dei Lombardi rises 998 m. above sea level.
The Castle of Guardia dei Lombardi had been a military base and royal residence for centuries, consequently the castle was almost constantly under siege. The first major battle the castle witnessed was in 1133, when Ruggiero II's army besieged Guardia dei Lombardi. The first documented mention of the fortress in the Middle Ages dates to 1054. Over the succeeding centuries, ownership of the castle passed from hand to hand - Matteo Gesulado, Raimondello del Balzo, prince of Taranto and Pirro del Balzo.
The castle, again, witnessed strife when, in 1486 Ferdinand I of Aragon was faced with a baronial revolt in favour of René of Anjou, the pretender to the throne. In 1492, Ferdinand I of Aragon led an invasion of Guardia dei Lombardi and besieged the castle once again. The castle was completely destroyed by several powerful earthquakes over the centuries.
According to local historians, a 17th century ducal palace was built on the remains of this castle.
