Situated on a hilltop, which rises approximately 707 meters above sea level, Montefusco is one of the most important historic villages in the Irpinia region.
The first written record documenting the existence of Montefusco dates back to 1119.
Over the years, several famous people visited the Castle such as Callisto I and Onorio II, the Norman Tancredi and Carlo d'Angiò. In 1722 the fief was purchased by Lucio Caracciolo, duke of S. Vito.
Built in Norman times, the Fortress underwent several changes and was converted to a Prison, in the first half of the 15th century. Since 1851, the King Ferdinando II di Borbone imprisoned only anti-Bourbon patriots. Sadly it was a place where prisoners were tortured and very difficult to get out alive.
The prison was definitively closed in 1923.
