The origins of Villamaina go back to medieval Times.
It became fief of the Caracciolo family in the 15th century, it passed to Luigi Gesualdo, Earl of Conza in the 16th century and then it passed again to the Caracciolo family.
Villamaina is renowned for the healing power of its thermal springs.
At the beginning of 19th century, Duke Caracciolo built the first spa establishment. In the following years the spa establishment was enlarged and modernized in order to host a large number of foreign visitors.
In 1656 the terrible epidemic plague struck Villamaina.
Many buildings were severely damaged or destroyed by the strong earthquake of 1980 that struck the area.
The spa establishment of San Teodoro, heavily damaged during the earthquake of 1980 was rebuilt by the Sanfelice family.
