The village
rises on the hilltop at 640 m.
altitude.
People
settled around the fortress that
was built during the
Swabian-Norman domination. The
Castle was probably built in the
second half of the 11th
century in order to protect
the surrounding territory from
Byzantine raids. Since
1240 the castle passed
through many hands- the
Spanish Captain
Consalvo Fernadez de
Cordova, Ugone de Luca and
Charles III, king of
Spain.
After 1825
the Castle saw many defensive
additions and was transformed
into a noble residence.
Three of
the original four towers are
still standing. The fourth and
tallest, is believed to have
crumbled during the earthquake of
1456.
