    Historical notes

Tufo Castle is set on a volcanic rock, on the top of the hill. It was built by Raone del Tufo during the Lombard domination. The first historical mention of the little town appeared in the 9th century.

People settled around the Castle and used the volcanic rock that was widely present in the subsoil of the whole area of the country, to built their fortress. Lombards, Byzantines fought over this strategic fortification for years. In the second half of the 11th century the Normans defeated the Lombards and the Byzantines, who were totally exhausted by years of war.

The Castle was therefore built as a fortress to protect the village from enemy raids. In the second half of the 15th century Alfonso V of Aragon reigned over Tufo. This Dynasty modified the structure of the Castle with decorations and ornaments. The Castle had also the function to provide a retreat for Royal or aristocratic families as the so called del Tufo, who ruled over Tufo in 1578. It followed a period of earthquakes, plagues and floods. Two other aristocratic families reigned over Tufo: Piatti of Venice and Capobianco of Benevento.
