The Castle was attacked and devastated by Norman troops under the command of Ruggiero II in 1134. During the period of Swabian domination the castle was rebuilt by the Avenalia family and used to hold prisoners. From 1681, the castle traditionally belonged to the Zamagna family, and it served as a symbol of his power. It was used as a fortification until the early 17th century, when the castle was changed into a comfortable Renaissance palace.
The mighty castle-palace has a quadrilateral layout. The front of the palace has balconies with stylish window sill mouldings and vaulted windows. The castle has been recently restored.
