The new small town of Melito is pleasantly situated on the right side of the river Ufita, nearly 2 miles from the old medieval town.
After the earthquake of 1962, the old medieval town of Melito was abandoned and pulled down for safety reasons.
At this location you can actually find only the Melito's Castle ruins: you can see the curtain Walls and a rectangular floor plan courtyard.
Over the years, the Castle, built in Norman times, was transformed into a magnificent residence in the 17th century and passed to several aristocratic families such as the Pisanelli family and finally to the Pagano who were the owners from 1770 to 1806.
