    HISTORICAL NOTES | TOURIST INFORMATION

    Historical Notes

The Castle ruins are sited in a commanding position on a steep slope overlooking the Calore valley. It is believed to have been built at the end of the 9th century by the Lombards. It was first mentioned in a Lombard document written by Arechi II in 762.
The castle's impressive cylindrical keep, half-round tower and sturdy defensive structure still remain and the fortress is an amazing sight. In the 15th century the Castle was transformed into a noble residence by the Angevin rulers. Over the years Del Monte castle was home to many nobles - Filippo II d'Angiò prince of Taranto and King Alfonso d'Aragona. In 1527, French troops, led by general Lautrec, besieged Montella and severely damaged the Castle, after which it was completely abandoned.

Excavation work within the Castle walls, directed by prof. Rotili, uncovered a necropolis, whose funerary artefacts are in the "Museo Irpino"(Museum) in Avellino.

Today you can visit the Tower and the archaeological site.
