The ruins of the Castle in Montoro Inferiore, built during the Lombard domination, are situated on a hilltop.
The first documented mention of the fortress dates back to 1022.
In Norman times, Montoro passed to Guglielmo Sanseverino who sent thirty of his soldiers to the Holy Land.
The Castle was besieged by Queen Giovanna d'Angiò during the war between the Aragonese and the Angevin kingdoms, but her troops led by Giacomo Piccinino couldn't conquer it.
With the introduction of gunpowder, Castles proved to be useless. Even the mightiest of Castles was no match against a cannon so in the course of the 15th century Montoro Castle was permanently abandoned.
The Castle in Montoro was certainly an imposing building, nevertheless, only its ruins, a quadrangular turret, a tower that is not higher than six metres, a 15 metres high tower, parts of the outer walls and the cylindrical Donjon have survived to the present day.
Norman Castle in
Montoro Superiore
Montoro Superiore had also a Castle that was built during the Norman conquest.
Much of the history of the castle's construction is vague or confusing. Sadly, what has survived are parts of the outer ward's curtain.
