Cairano is a small village located on a hill 810 meters above sea level.
Perched on high ground overlooking the River Ofanto, Cairano Castle dominates the village that grew up around it over the last 1000 years.
The Castle began life as a Lombard fortress. Since that time the Castle has been ruined, rebuilt and modified many times. In 1269 it was purchased by Bartolomeo Bellonaso while in 1355, it was sold to Sir Castiglione Mattia Gesualdo.
The castle was home to the Gesualdo for 300 years, but had fallen into ruin by the end of the 15th century. In 1770 Nicola Garofalo became the marquis of Cairano and was also the last lord of this castle. Little remains of the main castle building apart from curtain wall that protected the outer courtyard.
