The Castle of Flumeri was built in Norman times. The first documentation of the castle dates back to the beginning of 12th century when it was purchased by the Norman ruler Guarino de Formari. During its long history, the castle changed ownership many times.
The castle was besieged and heavily damaged in 1122 by troops led by Guglielmo, duke of Puglia. The castle continued to be involved in bloody conflict over the ensuing centuries. In 1461 the castle was besieged again, this time by King Ferdinando I. Sadly the castle has been completely dismantled at the beginning of the 18th century because it was badly damaged by the devastating earthquake of 1694.
In the early 16th century Bufata Palace became royal property. So Neapolitan Princes used the Palace and grounds for hunting. (Bufata Palace was turned later into a customs House).
