An imposing Norman Castle, called "della Leonessa" was built on the top of the hill of Montemiletto, from which vantage point it was possible keep watch over the Calore valley and the Sabato River. According to some historians, the fortress was probably built by the Longobards between 8th and 9th centuries during the Renaissance.
After the siege of 1419, della Leonessa Castle was heavily damaged. It was transformed into an elegant noble residence by the de Tocco family during the 16th century. Charles III King of Spain visited it two times. The village of Montemiletto subsequently became a fief held by the Caracciolo, the della Leonessa and finally the de Tocco family. The de Tocco family became Princes in 1567 and ruled over Montemiletto until 1806.
Recently restored, it is probably one of the best preserved Castles in Irpinia.
