    Historical notes

Taurasi Castle was built on the hilltop, located on the right side of the river Calore at 400 metres altitude. First recorded in the 10th century, the hamlet was built during the Lombard domination. In 910 and in 995 the Castle was destroyed during the Saracen raids and rebuilt during the Norman domination.

The fief passed to Giacomo Filangieri in 1381, after that to Sergianni Caracciolo, count of Avellino. In 1496 the Castle was destroyed by the army of Francis II, King of the two Sicilies, then rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century and transformed into a magnificent residence in the beginning of the 17th century.

The castle can be entered through an arched porch. We can also see the crest of the Gesualdo and d'Este families hanging on the wall above the entrance portal. Lots of aristocratic families stayed at the Castle such as Torquato Tasso, Eleonora d'Este and Carlo Gesualdo.
